The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced plans to commence a nationwide revalidation of the register of voters, aimed at removing ineligible entries and strengthening the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral process.
In a public notice issued via its official X handle, the commission stated that the exercise will target the removal of null and ineligible voters, including deceased persons, non-Nigerians, underage registrants, and cases of multiple registrations, in line with legal provisions.
INEC clarified that the exercise is not a fresh registration but is specifically for voters who registered between 2011 and 2024.
According to the commission, the revalidation is part of efforts to revise, update, clean, and strengthen the integrity, accuracy, inclusivity, and credibility of the national register of voters ahead of future elections.
The exercise will be conducted both online and at designated physical centres across the country. It is scheduled to run from April 13 to May 29, 2026, across local government areas, registration areas, and polling units.
Daily operations will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., including weekends and public holidays.
For online participation, voters are required to visit the INEC portal, create an account, and provide their voter identification number or personal details for biometric verification.
The system will verify identities using facial recognition and cross-check data against the central voter database. Successful applicants will receive a notification and a validation slip.
For physical revalidation, voters must visit INEC-designated centres with their voter identification details, where officials will conduct biometric verification and update necessary information.
Upon completion, a slip or printout will be issued, and a notification may also be sent via email or phone.
INEC has urged all eligible voters to participate, describing the exercise as critical to ensuring credible elections and strengthening democratic processes in Nigeria.
